Tips for how to structure a winning accumulator:

Concentrate on home wins – Around 48% of all football matches end in home wins – immediately we have increased our chances of a winning selection by focusing on teams at home.

Look for value – The name of the game is finding value; if you believe you’ve found a 2/1 shot that should be Evens then back it and add it to your accumulator. Finding matches with extra value will keep you on the path to long-term profit.

Use form tables and stats to narrow your shortlist – Find out current trends and form tables, you can pick out good value using these kind of stats. i.e. Coventry are floating around the lower reaches of League One this season so the average Joe punter will avoid them – but their home record is excellent – making them a great bet and price when they play at home.

Look at alternative markets – Most punters are unaware of just how diverse the betting markets are. You can back when the first goal will be scored, who will score it, will there be a penalty awarded and what the referee had for breakfast. OK, I made the last one up but you get the picture. Be creative and use all of the markets at your disposal.

Avoid backing a draw in your big multiples – The price on the draw is appealing but we need a lot of luck to consistently win backing the draw. Occasionally I will back a cheeky little draw treble for a bit of fun, if they are local derbies or cup ties, but on the whole I never put a draw in my main accumulator.

Take advantage of bookmaker offers and prices – As a punter we are spoilt for choice these days with the bonuses, price boosts and enhanced multiples. Be sure to check out the latest offers with the main online bookies, you can squeeze a few more quid out of your acca just by shopping around. Most bookies have an enhanced accas or price boost section, always check these out!

Avoid big odds in your acca – Aston Villa maybe 8/1 to beat Man Utd but I wouldn’t consider it adding it to my multiple. If you fancy Villa to get a win then I would advise a single bet, chances are it will sink your acca before it’s even started.

Don’t back your own side (or England either) – I seldom add my own side to my bet slip for the plain and simple reason I am not thinking subjectively. You will have too much emotion attached to it rather than betting with your head. Likewise I never back England. A lot of patriotic money is punted on England forcing the price down, there is never any value in backing the three lions and the fact we play like a pub team doesn’t help either.

Generally speaking you should keep it simple when picking your accumulator. Don’t get carried away with the prices that are stacking up on your bet slip, keep a level head and most of all, you should have fun.

I've made What Acca to try and help people starting out with accumulator betting. The possibilities of these types of bets are pretty much endless, with the major attraction coming from the fact that a lot of money can be won for very little outlay. What Acca will hopefully teach you how to make more profitable accumulator bets whilst also eradicating some of the mistakes that I have made over the years.
