Champions League Match Day 1 tips

The 2022-23 Champions League group stage kicks off on Tuesday 6 September, with four English clubs and two Scottish teams in action. It’s great to have Celtic and Rangers in the competition, with the former meeting European champions Real Madrid and the latter going to the Netherlands for a tricky tussle with Ajax.

Best Champions League Match Day 1 Bets

TUESDAY 6 SEPTEMBER

Dinamo Zagreb 17:45 Chelsea

It’s reasonable to expect Dinamo Zagreb to score in this game. The Croatian side overcame Norwegian club Bodo/Glimt to reach the group phase of the Champions League, enjoying a 4-1 in the second leg and they tend to score goals by the bucketload on home soil. Chelsea are strong favourites and should have too much quality. However, we wouldn’t be trusting them at the prices based on a relatively shaky start to the campaign.

BEST BET: BTTS Yes

Celtic 20:00 Real Madrid

Celtic have made a flawless start to the 2022-23 season and the Scottish champions have a puncher’s chance of getting something against the European Cup holders. While Real Madrid won last season’s Champions League, they looked defensively vulnerable all the way through and the home side are capable of running them close. That’s particularly after putting Rangers to the sword in the Old Firm derby.

BEST BET: Celtic +1.5

Sevilla 20:00 Manchester City

The wheels have really fallen off for Sevilla this season. After a strong 2021-22 campaign built on having a robust defence, Julen Lopetegui’s side have fallen by the wayside and look vulnerable against the Champions League favourites. Erling Haaland is likely to make his bow and we’re expecting Manchester City to make amends for the aberration at Villa Park where they only drew 1-1.

BEST BET: Manchester City -1.5

WEDNESDAY 7 SEPTEMBER

Ajax 17:45 Rangers

Alfred Schreuder is the man tasked with following in Erik ten Hag’s footsteps, with the Dutchman enjoying a strong start in charge of Ajax. They have won five consecutive matches and clearly benefitting from having Steven Bergwijn. The former Tottenham forward already has six goals for the Amsterdam club and we can see him getting on the scoresheet against a Rangers side who were put to the sword by Celtic at the weekend.

BEST BET: Steven Bergwijn to Score

Napoli 20:00 Liverpool

We aren’t confident that Liverpool can win in Naples given that they have fallen short away to Fulham, Manchester United and Everton thus far. There are midfield issues that have plagued the Reds since the season began and a draw might be the best that they can get against one of the leading teams in Italy. A 2-1 win in Lazio sets the home side up nicely for this clash and 21-year-old Khvicha Kvaratskhelia looks one to watch.

BEST BET: Napoli or Draw

Tottenham Hotspur 20:00 Marseille

We can’t be backing Tottenham at such short betting odds when they play a team who looked the second best in Ligue 1. Marseille have enjoyed five wins and a draw domestically this season and we could see former Arsenal pair Matteo Guendouzi and Alexis Sanchez take to the field. Luis Suarez can also help the visitors make their point against a Spurs side relatively inexperienced in this competition.

BEST BET: Draw
